Statement from the SUSK President on the April 24th Russian Attack on Ukraine

Apr 24, 2025 | Blog Posts, News, post_category, Press Releases

  April 24, 2025

Overnight, Ukraine suffered one of the deadliest aerial assaults since the full-scale invasion began. Russia launched more than 200 drones and missiles across Kyiv, Kharkiv, Pavlohrad, and Zhytomyr, killing at least 12 civilians and injuring over 90. Apartment buildings, vehicles, and vital infrastructure lie in ruin.

The Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK) unequivocally condemns this act of terror. These are not military strikes — they are attacks on ordinary people, on children sleeping in their homes, and on a nation’s right to exist in peace.

We acknowledge the international response to this escalation. Earlier in the day, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly criticized President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for what he called “inflammatory statements” about Washington’s proposed peace plan, telling him to “GET IT DONE.” Yet, after the bombs fell, Trump pivoted — posting “Vladimir, STOP” in a rare direct rebuke of the Kremlin. While this shift in tone may signal growing global alarm, political statements and bold words are no longer enough.

It has now been 44 days since Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire. And throughout this time, Russia has made one thing clear to the world: deals with terrorists are impossible. A deal with Russia is impossible. The time for loud words has passed. The time to act is now.

We urge the Canadian government and our allies to respond not just with condemnation, but with unwavering support: in defense aid, humanitarian relief, and diplomatic resolve.
To our community: do not let fatigue win. Ukraine still needs us — in solidarity, in advocacy, and in strength.

Слава Україні — Glory to Ukraine.

Katrina Korotky
President, Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union (SUSK)
