A Brief History and Modern Struggles
Ukraine, one of the largest East Slavic nations, has always fought for autonomy, sovereignty, and freedom—an enduring struggle rooted in its early history. Its historical legacy reaches back to the powerful medieval state of Kyivan Rus’, while the Ukrainian lands often became a battlefield and a coveted prize for many powers, including Poland, Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and especially Russia. In 1991, the Ukrainians finally gained independence together with 14 other Soviet republics, and Ukraine is rich in its diversity, talented people, cultural heritage, and resources—from the coal mines of Donbas to the Carpathian Mountains, and from the busy streets of Kyiv to the warm beaches of Crimea and Odesa. It has long aspired to be a European-oriented state—efforts that intensified after the 2013–14 Euromaidan Revolution. Russia’s subsequent annexation of Crimea, support for separatists in the Donbas, and its full-scale invasion in 2022—the largest military aggression in Europe since World War II—have only strengthened Ukraine’s resolve to defend its independence and democratic values.
